Audio
People get into radio and audio for a variety of reasons. Some because of their love of music, others because they want to be the ones who inform us of everything going on in our community, and some who want to be sports broadcasters. There are others who just want to entertain us, and yes, some want to have the coolest job in town, being on the radio.
The biggest thing, no matter what direction you go in, is the responsibility you have to your community. Being on the air, the audience trusts you for your input and for your contributions to the community. A career in on-air is a big responsibility but well worth it. Working in radio is a special opportunity to build a strong connection with your listeners. This is relevant regardless of market size. You can be one of the key voices in your small town, or you can keep your listeners up to date with the happenings in a big city.
Once you get your foot in the door at a radio station, you never know what job may catch your interest and what direction your career may take. You may come in looking to do on-air work but gravitate to promotions. Promotions is the department that comes up with concert giveaways, live broadcasts, and any other kind of idea that helps "promote" the radio station and its sponsors. You could find your niche in doing play-by-play for sporting events or establish yourself in the news department. Being a DJ and entertaining an audience is also incredibly fulfilling.
