Anne Marie Leamy
Radio Host
The job I've been doing for 19 years is hosting mornings on FM radio. I've always done morning drive. Also tracked middays and weekends. The job includes hosting, driving content, executing games, interacting with callers, interviewing guests, creating promotions, editing various audio, posting on social media, creating an after-show podcast, and after-the-show preparation. Managing a team of personalities that come together for the common good. The job also includes various public appearances. I personally do many non-profit appearances by choice. I feel it's our responsibility to support the community. FM is also responsible for any PSA. Weather, natural disaster, or emergency.
Someone who loves connecting with people on a personal level would love this job. If behind the scenes is more your feel, there are many producer positions in major markets. If you are the type of person who can be flexible and enjoys something different every day, radio is for you. Getting up at 3:30 am also takes willpower. Running a board can be taught. Knowing how to edit on Vox Pro, posting on social, and editing in Adobe are essential. Communication with listeners is most important. Treat everyone with the best customer service.
Radio is and always will be the most intimate medium. It's live and local. (Still can be personable when tracking) You form deep connections with people you may never meet. It's an amazing opportunity to have a platform to share information, connect the community, and make people laugh. Success takes time and perseverance. Getting let go in radio is very common. It's how you bounce back that matters. Take what you've learned and grow. Let it fuel you. Make all the connections you can and never burn bridges. It's a small network. I always check any negativity at the studio door. If it's something you're going through that can help others, be brave and open. I don't take a single day on the mic for granted.
